CSI Response to the Culling of Badgers Using CO

With the support of Stephen Hadley, we have been raising awareness of the recent proposal by the UK government to cull badgers by gassing them with carbon monoxide. Below is the response to this proposal from Molly Maher, President of CSI

17th April 2014

CONSUMER SAFETY INTERNATIONAL OBJECT TO THE PROPOSED CULLING OF BADGERS WITH THE USE OF CARBON MONOXIDE (CO)

Consumer Safety International (CSI) have been campaigning for well over 20 years on improving Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness as well as for improved regulations for safety both in the UK and abroad. This lethal gas has claimed many lives over the years including that of my own son Gary. My daughter Sheree was with him. She survived but was comatose for 5 months and is still confined to a wheelchair. They were on a Tenerife holiday.

I was shocked when it was brought to my attention by Mr Stephen Hadley that plans are afoot to use Carbon Monoxide as means of killing badgers. It is not only a myth that it always kills quickly, but it is extremely dangerous to the operative who would ave to inject the gas into setts. As President of CSI, I am vehemently opposed to the gassing of badgers. In my opinion, this is certainly an unacceptable solution.

Molly Maher, President, Consumer Safety International (CSI)
